In my home, there are a surprising number of items which use power. These include:
- 3 desktop computers (one of which is a media center). All of these are a few years old
- Fridge/Freezer and a Chest Freezer
- Usual kitchen items - kettle, toaster, microwave, electric oven, portable radio
- All the bits which come with computers - speakers, USB devices etc
- Lighting - includes a number of energy saving bulbs, but some places where these can't be used, such as lights with dimmer switches)
- Telephones
- Other stuff like vacuum cleaner, electric iron
- TV, video, DVD, Xbox
Probably lots more. The point is that only when you start to look, you realize how many items are in use in the home.
My aim isn't to replace all of these with energy saving appliances - the costs of doing so would far outweigh the gains in reduction of electricity. However, we can use them more carefully, and do things to reduce their consumption (or more accurately to reduce our use of them to decrease consumption)
